Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant Provost (AP) will support the strategic planning and entrepreneurial development of programs and policies related to the newly-created Office of the Vice Provost for Research. Reporting to the Vice Provost of Research (VPR), the AP will also oversee the administrative operations of the office by providing strong research support, work flow, scheduling, staffing various committees and preparation of briefing materials, communication (including website development) and correspondence. In addition, the AP assumes primary responsibility for, and implementation of, initiatives and projects as directed by the Vice Provost; works with and advises the VPR on legislative, regulatory, and policy matters that affect, or might reasonably be construed to affect, the conduct of research at the university; works closely with the VPR and Vice President for Finance to establish a model for oversight of pre-award policies and practices in sponsored research University-wide and conducts analytical policy research, drafts analyses and position papers as designated by the Vice Provost, and assists in communicating  the university's research policies to both internal and external constituencies. The AP will supervise and provide guidance to the administrator for the institutional Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee and will represent the VPR, as designated and appropriate, within the university and in national organizations focused on research. 

Qualifications

  • JD/advanced degree required with significant years of experience working on legal/regulatory/policy matters involving University activities, especially research; excellent analytic, written and verbal communication. 

  • Multi-tasking skills; ability to function effectively in team settings; must be highly self-motivated, well organized, flexible, and able to work independently and manage time-sensitive projects in a fast-paced and often pressured environment; ability to build relationships with people at all levels of a highly decentralized organization.   

  • Knowledge of faculty research in a university environment, divisions, and research affiliates, and a strong understanding of academic institutions with an emphasis on research across a broad and diverse constituency.

  • Knowledge of university administrative units and policy and practices relative to research administration, including sponsored project administration, pre-proposal guidelines and processes, information dissemination practices.

  • Experience in resource allocation and financial management.

  • Must have strong diplomatic skills, excellent judgment and high level of professionalism, as well as energy and enthusiasm for the mission of the enterprise.
